Bernice King, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, joined the West Chester Area School District’s “Strengthening Community Symposium” to discuss structural racism, connecting across party lines, and the legacy of her parents, writes Emily Rizzo for WHYY.

The free virtual symposium consisted of four events where local organizations, leaders, and student groups talked about coalition building, community activism, and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

King, who serves as CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, provided advice for students who are hoping to fight racial and economic inequities. When it comes to coalition building, patience is crucial, she explained.

“You can’t give up if something doesn’t happen in the time frame that you think it should happen,” said King.

Answering a question about divisiveness in the Chester County community that is served by the school district and the insistence of some people that MLK fixed the issue of racism, King said that racism and economic inequalities are still rampant in the country.

She added that it is the responsibility of those who know and understand her father’s work to educate those who do not.
