Grumbles, a restaurant app that sifts local menus to accommodate dietary restrictions, is being road-tested in Phoenixville. Kennedy Rose double-clicked the details for The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Its creators, Pete Wolk and Raphael Watanabe, took their technology background and applied it to diners who struggle to eat out, owing to restrictions on what they can and cannot safely order. They sought to address the often-isolating situation.

“When we started adding up all the issues that we’ve experienced with food while eating out, and then starting to expand that to our family and friends, we knew we had a game-changer,” said Wolk.

The app they have developed shows users photos of foods from local restaurants based on the taste profile they set up. It has a “food-first approach,” unlike most of their competitors that use a restaurant-first approach.

The duo decided to launch in Phoenixville because although its hospitality sector has expanded significantly in recent years, it is still not as technologically challenging as Philadelphia’s. The app currently has uploads of every menu item from every borough restaurant.

“Our approach is to cut our teeth in the suburbs and then eventually move into” Philadelphia, said Wolk.
