Career Corner: Driving for a Gig? These Are Your Best Philadelphia Area Options
Have you been thinking of trying out something like being an Uber driver as a job? Or maybe you already do drive for pay and you are wondering if there are better options out there.
The Los Angeles Times compiled some of the best options you have for driver gigs, citing data from sources like Gridwise by providing statistics on subjects like pay.
As you can imagine the breakdown of the most lucrative work also varies based on the city. So for in Philadelphia, you might be surprised to learn that delivering groceries through apps like Instacart or Shipt is actually the least profitable drive for pay work in the city.
The data showed that you will typically only be making about $13.18 an hour doing such work.
Delivering food orders through services like Doordash, Grubhub, or UberEats does significantly better at $17.39 per hour. However, if you really want to start making a decent living wage, you want to look at rideshare options in Philadelphia.
Lyft, Uber, and Via were examined and found they were generally earning around $23.33 an hour.
If you are really looking at the best bang for your buck, it is parcel delivery services that lead the pack. If you work for services like Amazon Flex or Roadie, you can expect to earn an average of $25.04 an hour in Philadelphia.
That is quite a disparity from the pay the grocery delivery drivers are making. In fact, as stated, which apps generate the best income varies by city, but nearly across the board delivering groceries was often the lowest paying of all the services examined.
If you have been driving for pay and these numbers are a shock about how much more you could make, it might be time to start looking for a new gig. And if you are just starting out, now you have more insight to help you make an informed choice which option is best for you.
