James Joo-Jin Kim, Executive Chairman of Amkor Technology, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers that was headquartered in West Chester until 2005, and his wife, Agnes, have gifted $25 million to the University of Pennsylvania. Kennedy Rose reported the beneficence for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The gift will create two new programs:

  • The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the School of Arts & Sciences
  • Kim Family Neurovascular Surgery Program within Penn Medicine

It will also create the Kim Korean Studies Fund that will operate within the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management and International Studies at Wharton School.

Kim graduated from Wharton in 1959 with his bachelor’s degree. He received a master’s degree in economics in 1961. He served as the CEO of Amkor Technology until 2009.

“As a young immigrant arriving to the United States from Korea, the university provided me with a world-class education while instilling in me an unwavering work ethic,” said Kim. “The knowledge and character I gained at Penn helped to pave the road to my success, and I hope this gift helps to pave that road for others.”
