There’s some exciting activity happening over at Dunwoody Village, a continuing care retirement community in Newtown Square.

Several construction projects have been underway since 2020. The upgrades provide both aesthetic and functional improvements as Dunwoody Village rebuilds for the future.

In 2020, Dunwoody’s Board of Trustees approved a $24 million expansion and renovation of the community building.

The Dunwoody Village Community Center

The expansion project got underway in November 2020.

It nearly doubles the size of the community center. That means a larger auditorium, more areas for informal gathering and expanded space for dining and fitness.

The project doubles Dunwoody’s dining area, auditorium, fitness center and recreational spaces on the lower level, according to Board Chairman Edward Chiosso, “which will enhance the quality of life for all residents.”

The addition will include a 200-seat auditorium with ADA access, new lighting and audio controls, main floor renovations with new flooring and finishes, and an updated reception area.

The previous auditorium has been converted into a new lounge and bar for resident gathering.

The dining area now has a second kitchen and new casual and formal dining rooms, including a section for grab and go eating options.

On the expanded community center’s lower level, the fitness center has more windows, with dedicated space for fitness classes and exercise equipment.

Additional upgrades will improve the art studio, game room, hair salon, wood shop and resale shop.

Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

The entire project should be finished by August 2022.

“Weʼre very excited to see the new Dunwoody in the months and years to come.” says Kathy Barton, Director of Operations.

The Dunwoody Village Library

The library is being expanded and a history studio added.

It’s also joining the digital age with an online catalogue that residents can access from their homes.

Resident and professional librarian Marjorie Smink spearheaded the effort, cataloguing every item with barcodes. There are 8,000 items to catalog.

“You will be able to search by title or subject, just as you would at a public library,” she says. “You can put a hold on items without having to leave your apartment.”

East Country House

Over at East Country House, a five-phase $6.5 million hallway renovation was completed in May 2021.  There were renovations to the heating and air conditioning, sprinklers, and dry wall. Painting and new carpeting completed the upgrades.
