Tower Health to Close Jennersville Hospital. Is Brandywine Hospital Next?

In a bid to dig itself out from massive losses, Tower Health has decided to close Jennersville Hospital in West Grove. The health system is also selling Chestnut Hill Hospital and more than a dozen urgent care centers. Harold Brubaker reported the cuts for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The price for Chestnut Hill and the urgent care centers has yet to be set with the buyer, Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic. A final agreement could take months.

“These decisions were made after an intensive process by which Tower’s board sought to balance long-term sustainability and impact upon our team and the communities we serve,” said Tom Work, chair of Tower’s board.

Jennersville is the smallest of Tower’s hospitals with just 52 beds and 317 employees. The company plans to help Jennersville staff find new jobs either at its other facilities or with Penn Medicine.

Corporate leadership at Tower still seeks alternatives to closure for Brandywine Hospital. While the hospital has lost significant market share over the last few decades, it still has something sorely needed that no other acute-care hospital in Chester County has: psychiatric care beds.
