This Retail Operation in Kennett Square an Ode to the Area’s Mushroom Industry

By

The Mushroom Cap, a retail operation in Kennett Square, guarantees customers a fungi time. It sells various mushroom-centric products, while dedicating a portion of the store to the history of the area’s mushroom industry. Tamala Edwards dug up the details for 6ABC.

“I advertise fresh mushrooms, gifts, collectibles, and gourmet mushroom products,” said owner Kathi Lafferty.

The name she chose fit well, she believes, as the store is located in the town known as the Mushroom Capital of the World.

Choosing to start a mushroom store was easy since fungi are a family business for Lafferty.

“Growing up here, it was all about mushrooms,” she said. “My dad had a business and he worked for the mushroom growers.”

Her husband, Tom, also worked on a family mushroom farm started by his father.

Most of the fresh mushrooms Lafferty offers come from local farms. Her selection is wide, ranging from varying sizes of white mushrooms to cremini mushrooms and more. She also offers other exotic varieties, as well as foraged mushrooms.

The mushrooms are also included in many different products that range from coffee to ketchup.

“They’ve come up with more mushroom-related items because people are wanting it,” said Lafferty.
