More than 600 Neumann University students moved into residence halls on August 26-29 in preparation for the August 30 start of fall classes.

Family members carried refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, clothing, and other necessities of college life into five residence halls during sweltering summer heat, aided by smiling Neumann volunteers.

Resident students were required to submit proof of vaccination or a valid exemption form (citing medical or religious reasons) before being granted access to their rooms. In addition, non-vaccinated residential students had to present proof of a recent, negative COVID test.

On June 10, Neumann announced that it would require vaccinations for students, faculty and staff by the beginning of the fall term.

“To keep our campus safe, we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to encourage vaccinations,” said Dr. Chris Domes, university president.

Neumann is also requiring everyone to wear masks indoors for fall classes, at least for now.

“For the foreseeable future while this Delta variant continues to rage, we are asking people to mask up,” said Domes. “We are hopeful that may change or that we are able to relax the policy if the variant slows and the virus gets less intense.”

Domes noted that students are accommodating and resilient and don’t have issues adapting to masking.

“I think we are in a place where people are really glad to be participating and present with each other,” he said.

One sophomore agrees. “It’s hot but I’m ready to start the semester and be here again. I’m excited,” said Adele Robinson.

“Everyone is excited to be here. You can see it on the students’ faces,” said Graduate Assistant Ashley Barba who helped students check in.
