Masks can go back in the drawer, starting today.

It’s the time we have all been waiting for: the state’s mask mandate is finally lifted today. Approximately 60 percent of the state’s residents have been vaccinated against COVID-19, writes Hannah Kanik of PhillyVoice.

Effective today, the mask mandate for all Pennsylvanians has been lifted, regardless of vaccination status. The universal order first went into effect on April 15, 2020, when the pandemic was really rearing its ugly head.

Gov. Tom Wolf did say his goal was for the mandate to be lifted once 70 percent of the state’s population was vaccinated, and he believes the state will reach that goal by the end of June, just a few days away.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pennsylvania is currently eighth in the U.S. for overall vaccination percentages.

However, some hospitals, long-term care facilities, and businesses will still ask people to mask up.

Acting Health Secretary Alison Beam said residents must follow the guidelines if they wish to visit those various businesses and health facilities.

Don’t need your disposable masks anymore? Please dispose of them in the trash, not on the ground or the toilet.
