Philadelphia Airport Travelers Feeling Impact of Staffing Shortages

By

Travelers at Philadelphia International Airport are noticing longer lines as staffing shortages continue to plague airlines and TSA officials, reports Katie Katro for 6ABC.

The airport’s key airline, American Airlines, is canceling an average of two flights a day in Philadelphia.

Passenger Vincent Alibrando was in line two-and-a-half hours early at the Frontier counter for an 8 AM flight to Fort Myers, Fla.

He still missed his flight because the long line kept him from checking his bag.

He got a last-minute flight on another airline.

“We lost our entire day with our rental car we had waiting and the hotel that we were supposed to be at,” said Alibrando.

TSA said there are staffing shortages at more than 100 airports, triggering the long lines at checkpoints.

To fix the shortage, TSA is offering $1,000 officer recruitment incentives.

A spokesperson for TSA said there’s enough staff on hand but there are openings that need to be filled.

“We’re looking to fill these vacancies to make sure that we have enough officers on board,” said Lisa Farbstein, a spokesperson for TSA. “And working to help make sure there is a smoother, efficient screening process at the checkpoints as possible.”
