West Chester Native Impresses in the Big Leagues, Prompting Calls for Larger Role with Houston Astros

West Chester native Chas McCormick has been impressive as a Major League Baseball player, despite his limited role with the Houston Astros, writes Chandler Rome for the Houston Chronicle.

McCormick, a Henderson High School graduate who played collegiately at Millersville University, has adapted to his role as a reserve, not an easy feat for a young prospect.

With his big-league audition entering its second month – after he spent three years in the minors – McCormick is taking advantage of opportunities when they come his way. The 26-year-old recently took Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Lyles deep for an opposite-field home run in his first plate appearance in six days.

“I’m impressed,” his teammate, Carlos Correa, told him. “You get a couple at-bats every week, and it’s cool that you kind of stay in it and fight and look good up there.”

The numbers are also in McCormick’s favor. He managed to raise his OPS (on-base plus slugging) to .779 with the first multi-hit game of his pro career. As an Astro, he has eight hits, five of which have garnered extra bases.

“You just have to be prepared every single day, activate, get yourself ready because you never know when you’re going to get in,” McCormick said.
