Avondale’s Transformation Yoga Project is ending its operations after eight years. As its leaders dismantle the nonprofit, they are donating its financial reserves to organizations that will further its mission. Jen Samuel covered the development for the Daily Local News.

“We have provided more than $150,000 in financial support to national organizations that are aligned with our mission, including expanding accessibility to trauma-sensitive yoga, community investment, and continuing our programming for individuals within the justice system,” said Mike Huggins.

Huggins is founder and executive director of Transformation Yoga Project.

In the past eight years, the service-provider has taught yoga in prisons across the Philadelphia region, benefitting:

  • Chester County Prison
  • Montgomery County Correctional Facility
  • Montgomery County Youth Center
  • Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center
  • Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Prior to 2020, Transformation Yoga Project expanded to teaching at more than 65 partners. Class attendance was 24,000 annually.

After the pandemic put in-person classes on hold, however, the organization pivoted from service provider to resource provider.
