Drive-in theaters – like the one that opened at Exton Square Mall over weekend – can be added to homebound family dinners and board games on the list of activities that have experienced a resurgence during the pandemic, writes Frank Fitzpatrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Parking Lot Theaters is located on the top tier of a parking garage behind the former Sears building. The pop-up theater will have two movie showings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

The company’s founder, Jason Hunter, got the idea to open a pop-up drive-in after looking for somewhere to visit when the pandemic started and finding nothing.

“I’d been thinking about doing a pop-up drive-in for a while, and finally, after I started to see that a lot of companies were doing it, I figured why not?” he said.

The Cheltenham native first opened a drive-in theater and haunted Halloween village in October in neighboring Montgomery County. Around Christmas, he began looking into the option of adding an Exton location. The parking lot at the mall emerged as an ideal opportunity.

Admission for the drive-in is $32, with the premium spaces costing an extra $18. Attendees can reserve their spots online in advance.
