The first mass COVID-19 vaccination site for healthcare workers in the Philadelphia area opened at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell on Wednesday, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The county has received 7,000 doses of the vaccine and expects to administer around 800 doses per day at the newly opened site. The vaccines are currently only available to frontline workers.

And while there has been a lot of skepticism surrounding the vaccine, healthcare workers are keen to be among the first to receive their doses at the site.

“I wanted to be vaccinated quickly because, in our profession, we are inches away from our patients every day,” said Kim Even, a Blue Bell optometrist.

Frontline workers need to register for an appointment. Val Arkoosh, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, asked those waiting for their appointment to be patient.

“Right now, the demand for vaccinations is far greater than our supply,” she said.

Montgomery County’s new regional vaccination site could also now be used as a blueprint for larger-scale efforts once the vaccines become available to the general public.
