Bove Jewelers in Kennett Square is currently hosting a pop-up art exhibition with original works by Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, Salvador DalĂ, and others, writes Peter Crimmins for WHYY.

The 48 pieces currently on display in the jewelry store’s showroom are collectively priced at more than $10 million and have been loaned by Bove’s longtime customers.

The idea was hatched by Bob Strehlau, the store’s owner, and his brother Matt, who works with him. The goal was to generate some excitement on State Street’s commercial corridor, where the store has been located for the last nine decades.

“We started brainstorming what can we do for fun, without charging anyone, just to have people have a great night out during the pandemic,” said Strehlau.

All 48 pieces were loaned by three private art collectors from the Kennett Square region.

And while people cannot just walk into the store, since all visits are by appointment, Strehlau hopes that those who do come in will pause to enjoy the small gallery and leave with a positive feeling about State Street.
