Alan Horwitz, a Philadelphia businessman who is renowned in the Delaware Valley as a 76ers superfan, spent more than $1 million on Johnny Bench memorabilia that was auctioned off by Exton-based Hunt Auctions last month, and promptly returned the items to the baseball legend, writes Bill Cieslewicz for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Horwitz, who has floor seats near the 76ers’ bench during basketball season, is friends with the former Cincinnati Red. The two men met early in Bench’s Hall of Fame career and quickly hit it off.

“When I learned of the auction of Johnny’s memorabilia, I felt compelled to participate, with the goal to return some of the items to the Bench family and Johnny’s fans,” said Horwitz, 76, the founder and chairman of Campus Apartments, a student housing company based in Philadelphia.

The items Horwitz acquired included a 1969 All-Star Game bat and 1975 and 1976 World Series rings.

After learning about Horwitz’s gesture from David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, Bench and his family have decided to display the items to the public at several institutions, including the Baseball Hall of Fame.
