Local Nonprofit Celebrates World Habitat Day Through Its Mission to Build Homes for Middle and Low-Income Families

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County is celebrating World Habitat Day with the launch of a new website and a call to raise awareness of its mission to build quality, affordable homes for middle and low-income families in the community.

The organization works in partnership with volunteers, donors, and the entire Chester County community to build simple, quality houses for those who would not be able to afford a mortgage by conventional means.

HfHCC is joining the United Nations and organizations around the world today, Oct. 5, for World Habitat Day to raise awareness, educate, and mobilize individuals and communities to take action regarding the current global housing crisis.

“Throughout the month of October, Habitat will draw attention to the important role affordable housing plays in removing barriers to opportunity, success, and health that might have been part of a family’s life for years, if not generations,” said Christy Kane, HfHCC’s Director of Development and Marketing.

HfHCC’s new website will have information on the importance of World Habitat Day and ways to support Habitat’s mission. Habitat will also be launching a Virtual Build Challenge that includes easy projects that can be done as a family or independently. Participants will be invited to share virtually their build projects and will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

“Volunteers really are the driving force behind what we do,” said Becki Patterson, HfHCC’s Marketing and Communications Manager.

The Virtual Volunteer Build Challenge is a way to engage volunteers who want to be involved, but as a result of the pandemic, are not ready or able to join Habitat on site.

“When you volunteer, it’s always nice to know that you’re giving something back,” said Kane. “But when you’re literally swinging a hammer next to the person who will be living in the house you are building, that impact is beyond measurable.”

HfHCC depends on volunteers to help with construction as well as donations of both materials and dollars to ensure everyone has access to quality, affordable housing. When housing costs are more affordable, families have money to put toward other important household needs, as well as savings for the future. A safe, stable home changes the trajectory of lives and the well-being of those living in the home and the community.

In its inaugural year of participating in World Habitat Day, HfHCC is looking forward to connecting with the community and sharing the importance of its mission.

“Building a foundation is more than just pouring concrete to hold a house; it’s a foundation that allows families to build strength, stability, and independence,” said Kane. “With the support of our community, together we’re building safe and secure places families can call home.”
