The Philadelphia region is seeing unprecedented levels of philanthropy during the COVID-19 pandemic as people rally to help those who were affected the most, write Pedro Ramos and Kate Allison for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In the past seven months, neighbors and organizations all across the region have come together to support their local communities and causes, as well as cultural institutions addressing the needs of the entire area.

Between March 18 and June 29, more than a dozen COVID-19 philanthropic response funds have distributed more than $40 million across 10 counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey, according to the Philanthropy Network Greater Philadelphia.

This includes more than $17.5 million raised and distributed in under 100 days through an unmatched collaboration among more than 8,500 organizations and individuals who donated to the PHL COVID-19 Fund.

Through these efforts, organizations, such as the African Family Health Organization that supports African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees in Philadelphia, were able to continue their support of families made desperate by the pandemic.

“The pandemic has proven to us that good is in the fabric of the Greater Philadelphia region,” wrote Ramos and Allison of the Philadelphia Foundation.
