Despite World-Class Golf Courses, Philadelphia the Only Major City Without Regular PGA Tour Event
Despite having rabid sports fans and historic and world-class golf courses, including Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Philadelphia is the only major city nationwide without a regular PGA Tour event, writes Evan Macy for PhillyVoice.
Throughout the last four decades, since the 1981 U.S. Open at Merion, the fourth-largest market in the country has only hosted four PGA events, three LPGA events, and two Champions Tour events. This includes the return of the U.S. Open to Merion in 2013.
Most recently, the KPMG Woman’s PGA Championship took place at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. The men will return in six years for a PGA Championship that will also be held at Aronimink.

“For us, we actually started the planning this week,” said David Charles, the Senior Director of Championships at the PGA. “It’ll be here sooner than you’d expect, but you haven’t had much golf here other than the Merion U.S. Open.”
And other than the occasional event, there are currently no plans to create a regular stop for the PGA Tour in the area.
