This Low-Profile Sport an Intergenerational Tradition for One Malvern Family

Following a tradition started by one of the original members of the Philadelphia Curling Club, the Dudt family from Malvern continues to enjoy this low-profile sport through the generations, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.

The Philadelphia Curling Club was founded in Paoli in 1957 by a Wayne dentist who recruited a number of his friends, including Al Hutchinson.

Hutchinson transferred his love of curling to his daughter, Leslie Dudt, who then spread it among her husband, Brian, and their three children, Andrew, Daniel, and Susan. All five are now members of the Philadelphia Curling Club, where Brian also serves as a board member.

The husband and wife also ran the club’s junior program. And while their children tried other sports as well, curling has remained a family tradition.

“It’s a whole new community, and you make friends through that,” said Susan, 18, the youngest of the Dudt siblings.

The Great Valley High School graduate has been competing nationally since eighth grade and hopes to one day represent the U.S. in the Winter Olympics.
