WCU Men’s Soccer Coach Works to Bring Back Stability to Program Amidst Pandemic
Michael Benn, the men’s soccer coach at West Chester University, is working to bring back stability to the program amidst the pandemic, writes Neil Geoghegan for the Daily Local News.
“There is no playbook for this,” said Benn. “It’s been a rollercoaster for student-athletes, coaches, fans, administrators.”
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced in mid-July that all fall sports would be suspended until next spring. For the WCU men’s soccer team, the delay threatens to thwart the momentum it has gained throughout the last several years, as the Golden Rams boast a 44-11-8 record since 2017.
Following a 14-5-1 season and losing only three players to graduation, the team looked poised to make a run at the PSAC crown this year. Then, the coronavirus hit.
Benn is now working to ensure his players stay as positive as possible during a prolonged offseason by maintaining frequent communication with each of them. He is also emphasizing that they need to maintain their fitness and skill level and is now planning to unveil virtual fall workouts.
“Hopefully, our guys will continue to stay motivated,” he said.
