Kathy Koar, a member of Harcum College’s Class of 1999 who is the Program Director for Veterinary Nursing at the college, has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association’s Certified Veterinary Technician of the Year Award.

The award recognizes a PVMA member for outstanding service in veterinary technology in the year in which the award is given.

The committee recognized Koar’s dedication to the advancement of the field through her work in education and her spearheading of the Veterinary Nursing Initiative Summit.

PVMA Executive Director Jennifer A. Keeler said the PVMA “can think of no one more deserving of this award in 2020.”

Veterinary professionals from across the state gather at Harcum College for an information session about the Veterinary Nursing Initiative.

The Veterinary Nursing Initiative (VNI), formed by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, is committed to uniting the profession under a single credential. In support of the VNI, Harcum officially changed the name of its program from Vet Tech to Vet Nursing in 2019 to better reflect the level and quality of training students receive in the program. The VNI aims to standardize:

  • credentialing requirements
  • the services that a veterinary nurse is competent to perform and permitted to undertake
  • the continuing education requirements to retain licensure
  • clarity of the veterinary nurse’s role for the general public by uniting the veterinary technician (vet tech) profession under the new title of Registered Veterinary Nurse

At Harcum, Koar also created a robust Veterinary Partners program, creating a pool of dedicated scholarship funds for the college’s Vet Nursing students from cooperating Veterinary Nursing practices in the Philadelphia region.
