Hannah Carsley's first-place photo, above, has earned her a $5,000 scholarship to Harcum College.

Harcum College enrollment officials have named the winners of the 2020 Art & Design Contest. All the winning students reside in Pennsylvania and will attend Harcum this fall to study photography.

All entries were judged by Drew Simcox, the award-winning Photography Program director at Harcum College.

“I was very impressed with all our entries this year,” he said, “and delighted to award these scholarships and have these winners join our Photography Program.”

First place and a scholarship of $5,000 for the year was awarded to Hannah Carsley of Philadelphia. She is a graduate of the Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush. The photo demonstrates a great deal of creativity in splitting the face in half with one side closer than the other on the reflection. The colors are vibrant.

Second place and a scholarship of $2,500 for the year was awarded to Allentown native Rhiannon Karess, a graduate of Parkland High School. The contrast in her photo is perfectly executed. The streaming smoke gives it an eerie feeling and makes the viewer consider what exactly caused the smoke. The skyscrapers looming in the background dramatically contrast with the rundown buildings in the foreground.

Third place and a scholarship of $1,000 for the year was awarded to Philadelphia native Christopher Trower, a graduate of John Bartram High School. The composition in this image leads the eyes from one edge of the photograph around to the top to the lushly colored tulip on the right, seemingly sitting by itself.

Harcum College’s Art & Design Contest is held annually and will accept entries from high school seniors in either Photography or Graphic Design. Entries for the 2021 contest can be submitted beginning Nov. 1, 2020 at harcum.edu/contest.
