After learning from their son that soldiers were not receiving athletic shoes during their deployment, Deborah and John Hausladen of Chester Springs sprang into action and created a nonprofit to help, writes Isabella Sanchez Castañeda for Main Line Today.

Through its partnership with Bryn Mawr Running Company, Sneakers for Soldiers provides sneakers chosen by the soldiers to fit their particular needs.

The organization has thus far managed to donate more than 2,000 pairs of sneakers, each accompanied by a personal note.

“We initially thought that the only reason for providing these shoes was because their shoes break down,” said John Hausladen. “The real advantage is how these soldiers feel when they receive them. What they appreciate most is knowing that people are still thinking of them.”

The notes that accompany the sneakers have a tag on them with the name, city, and state of the donor. Some people also include notes that say “In honor of” or “In memory of” and phrases like “We’re thinking of you with each mile you run.”

“It’s a great way to boost morale,” said Deborah Hausladen.
