Carol Dittoe, a digital literacy teacher at the Octorara Primary Learning Center in Atglen, is retiring without the traditions that usually accompany the end of a great career, writes Avi Wolfman-Arent for WHYY.

So, to honor the teacher, WHYY decided to tell her story.

When she joined the Octorara Area School District in 1997, Dittoe had already been a full-time educator for two decades. While her new position was part-time, it gave her the chance to teach technology, her favorite subject, for the first time in her career.

“It’s just so fascinating,” said Dittoe, 65. “I’m still a techno geek.”

Dittoe, who received her doctorate in education in 2008, discovered her love for all things mechanical at an early age when her father gave her old radios to take apart and reassemble.

At Octorara, she spent years teaching middle school before starting to teach digital literacy to students as young as kindergarten.

With no farewell party, she recorded a video to her students, asking them to always follow their dreams.

“Take care,” said Dittoe. “And I will miss you.”
