The Democratic Party continues to make strides in Chester County, where, for the first time, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans – by 288 voters, writes Andrew Seidman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

This is the latest in a line of milestones Democrats have achieved in Chester County in recent years. These include getting a Democrat elected to represent the county in Congress for the first time since the 1850s and taking control of the Board of Commissioners for the first time ever.

The latest data compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of State shows that, as of Monday, the county had 148,194 registered Democrats compared with 147,966 Republicans. The county also has 61,895 voters who are either registered with another party or unaffiliated.

“Anyone who has lived in Chester County since George W. Bush won the White House knows the enormity of this moment,” said Dick Bingham, Chairman of the Chester County Democratic Committee.

Meanwhile, Chester County GOP Chairman Rick Loughery emphasized the importance of the independent voters across the county.

“Once we get through the June 2 primary, I’m confident our Republican candidates will make a compelling appeal to all voters,” he said.
