Chester County Council Launches New Initiative to Enable Scouting While Social Distancing
Although so much of society has screeched to a halt amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Scouting remains alive and well here in Chester County.
The Chester County Council launched a new initiative called Scout On! to enable its members to continue Scouting while practicing social distancing.
“Scouting has prepared us for this moment,” said Tamara Christensen, the Chester County Council’s Vice President of Program. “It teaches us to be prepared at all times and to help at all times.”
Among the activities Scout On! has offered are:
- a Virtual Camporee that was recently attended by approximately 300 people and included scavenger hunts, demos, and contests like “Are You Smarter Than a Scout?” and competitions to see who could create the best patches and campsites. The event, which concluded with an interfaith service and closing ceremony, was so successful that the Chester County Council will host a Virtual Camporee Sequel on Memorial Day weekend, from May 23-24. - a Virtual Academy that gives Scouts an opportunity to earn merit badges while social distancing
- a 30-Day Challenge for each Scout rank that can be used at home to help keep each Scout’s skills sharp
The Chester County Council’s glass-half-full approach to current events is refreshing, as the Council’s leadership collaborated to determine different ways to keep Scouts productive and engaged.
“The situation with the coronavirus has opened up so much global awesomeness that we never really had a reason to tap into before,” said Christensen. “We’re seeing troops forge partnerships, and they’re learning from one another about the creative things they’re doing with their members.”
The Chester County Council hopes the Virtual Camporee Sequel gives all Scout families a reason to get outside and celebrate.
“Last time, we had people joining us from California,” said Christensen. “The Sequel should tie in nicely with your plans to barbeque out back and enjoy some fresh air.”

To continue to provide the Scouting program during this time when people need it most, the Chester County Council depends on the generous donations of local families and businesses. Its in-person fundraising events have been cancelled or postponed, so any amount you can donate is appreciated.
