After a helmet saved her son Dominick from a serious injury, Karen Nudy Pecora of Chesterbrook became an ardent advocate for safer bicycling, writes Mari Schaefer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Two years ago, Nudy Pecora received the phone call every mother dreads. A man called to tell her that he had just hit her son with his car. Luckily, Dominick, then eight years old, was wearing a brand-new helmet while riding his bicycle.

This, according to the doctor at the Paoli Hospital’s ER, was what protected him from serious head injury.

After the incident, Nudy Pecora began pointing out the advantages of bike helmets to every parent and teen she could find. Also every spring, she posts her story on social media, sends out hundreds of texts on the issue, and even yells from her window at parents or kids who are not wearing one.

She also emphasizes the importance of ensuring the helmet is a good fit, which played a role in protecting her son.

“I believed it happened, so I can be this advocate,” said Nudy Pecora.
