Former Westtown School principal Eric Mayer is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic as the head of St. Stephen’s School in Rome, writes David Block for the Daily Local News.

The English-speaking boarding and day school has 295 students enrolled, with a third coming from the U.S., a third from Italy, and a third from other countries.

Mayer started teaching religion and woodworking at Westtown 26 years ago. He switched to teaching ethics when he became the school’s principal from 2010-2013. He moved to Italy in 2014 to take the position as Head of St. Stephen’s School.

From the moment coronavirus first emerged as a threat, Mayer took it seriously. He brought back all the students that were on international trips and made sure the entire student body made it safely to their home countries. He then switched to online learning.

He’s also remaining strong for his staff.

“I tell them, ‘We’re strong and resourceful, and anxiety is unproductive,’” said Mayer. “I remind them to remain calm and seek creative solutions.”
