West Chester Area School District Superintendent Dr. Jim Scanlon has provided an update to staff, parents, and students on the progress of the shift to remote learning, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

He used the opportunity to thank the community for their patience and support as the district “works furiously to shift to an online learning model.”

With the duration of school closures still unknown, most schools are preparing for an extended period.

“To be sensitive to our teachers, many of whom are also at home without child care, we are incorporating days ‘off’ for students so that teachers can have time to plan,” Scanlon wrote in a letter.

He said that the district plans to continue distributing food to lower-income families and is working on providing iPads, along with Internet access, for students who need it.

Furthermore, the district is working with staff members to provide them with resources and training while also enough flexibility to maintain important student connections. Schools will also record as many lessons as possible to allow children to access them at a time that is also manageable for the parents.
