The Chester County Historical Society has announced that, beginning Monday, March 16, its library and museum will be closed to the public through the month of April.

“The museum has been closed for gallery renovation and the installation of new exhibits,” said Beverly Sheppard, CCHS’s Interim President. “Closing the library is a further step toward protecting the public during the rapidly developing threats to public health posed by the COVID-19 virus.

“Through history, our society has been faced with numerous challenges of all kinds. What is most important is that we face the current crisis as a caring community.”

The announcement follows the cancellation of the 38th Annual Antiques and Art Show that was to be held at the Church Farm School this weekend.

“Our decision to cancel followed much deliberation,” said Sheppard. “We concluded that it was in the best interest of our community to protect the health and welfare of everyone. We share in the disappointment of all of our guests, dealers, and extraordinarily hard-working show managers, Deidre Healy and Nick Vandekar, and show chairs Holly and John Stoviak and their dedicated committee.”

CCHS is making plans to keep history-based conversations and activities part of its online and social media engagement with the public during the next several weeks.

“Our collections are filled with intriguing stories, images, and little-known historical happenings,” said Sheppard. “We are considering ways to invite people to participate in history explorations from their homes as they limit social contact.”
