Avondale’s Loch Nairn Golf Club, one of the two remaining open golf courses in Pennsylvania, was ordered by state officials to close on Friday, writes Frank Fitzpatrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Loch Nairn, along with Jack Frost National Golf Club in the Poconos, had reopened on Thursday after receiving state waivers that the clubs said permitted them to do so. But state officials said the two clubs had been granted permission to maintain their grounds but not to reopen to the public.

A Loch Nairn employee said that the waiver application the club received did not mention maintenance, and instead focused on how to protect those who might golf there from COVID-19.

To remove any misunderstandings, state spokesperson Dominique Lockett said outright on Friday that golf clubs only received permission to engage in maintenance.

“All other activity is prohibited,” said Lockett.

His statement cleared up the confusion that had emerged after the two clubs said they had successfully appealed Gov. Tom Wolf’s order to shutter all non-life-sustaining businesses. Other clubs that had appealed his decision and were rejected also wanted clarity on this issue.
