After preparing for the climb for more than a year, Bruce Terry, Scoutmaster of Troop 181 in Gladwyne, conquered Mount Everest and completed his Seven Summits quest, writes Bruce Terry for Scouting Magazine.

During his 20 minutes at the top – it’s not safe to linger longer due to lack of oxygen Terry unfurled three flags: one for his family, a troop flag, and the National Eagle Scout Association World Explorers flag.

With the successful ascent on May 23, 2019, he had officially climbed the tallest mountains on each continent.

“It was by far the most technically and physically challenging peak I’ve done,” said Terry. “It was like a compilation of all the other climbs I’ve done in one.”

To prepare for his latest accomplishment, Terry trained for an hour-and-a-half each day before and after work, as well as four to five hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

His training activities included weightlifting, cycling, running, and hiking with a backpack.

Now that he has achieved his dream, Terry is back home teaching at Temple Dental School, organizing free dental clinics for underserved patients, and planning his next challenge.
