Joe Segel, who founded more than 20 companies including TV shopping behemoth QVC and the Franklin Mint during his five-decade-long career, has died in Gladwyne of natural causes aged 88, writes Ryan Sharrow for the WHYY.

Segel started West Chester-based QVC 23 years ago. It was carried by 58 cable providers in 20 states. Today, the shopping giant is under the umbrella of Qurate Retail and reaches 380 million homes across the globe through 15 television networks.

Segel served as the company’s CEO until 1993 and continued as an adviser until six years ago.

“Joe Segel was a remarkable leader, entrepreneur, marketer, teacher, and friend,” said Mike George, CEO of Qurate Retail. “He was a visionary whose ideas changed the way the world shops.”

Over the years, Segel was inducted into the Direct Marketing Association’s Hall of Fame and the Specialty Advertising Hall of Fame. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Electronic Retailing Association and was a holder of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Drexel University.

To honor his life, QVC will make a donation to Segel’s charity of choice, Philabundance.
