Glenmoore’s Marisa DiChiacchio and her ex-husband Mike Dobbyn are fighting to find any kind of help for their son, Connor Dobbyn, who has Childhood Alzheimer’s, writes Maria Panaritis for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Connor, 11, was diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome Type C nine months ago. Most children with this diagnosis die before adulthood as their brains are slowly destroyed and their bodies wither.

“Everything that Connor has learned — walking, talking, writing, feeding himself — he will lose all those skills,” said DiChiacchio.

To confront this enemy, DiChiacchio and Dobbyn have set out on a rescue mission. They are sharing the story of their boy with the world, finding scientists and other parents dealing with this horrible disease to raise as much money as they can to help finance clinical trials.

Right now, their goal is to raise $1 million toward the $5 million required to start a clinical trial for the gene replacement treatment that is the only hope for their son.

“As a family, we’re just on a mission since we got this diagnosis,” said Dobbyn. “This is potentially a cure.”
