La Salle College High School graduate Chris Matthews, an MSNBC host who celebrated his 20th year with the network last week, is cancer-free following a successful surgery, writes Rob Tornoe for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 73-year-old host of Hardball with Chris Matthews, whose brother Jim Matthews is a former county commissioner in Montgomery County, was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“It had a Gleason number of nine,“ said Matthews. “That’s bad, because 10 is the top. So it meant it was aggressive.”
He opted for surgery, which was recommended to him by his doctor as the best option. After the procedure was done, Matthews took multiple tests to make sure it did not spread anywhere else, and the news he received was good.
“It didn’t go anywhere else,“ said Matthews. “Cancer can pop up anywhere. But there’s nothing there now. I’m lucky.”
And despite still recovering from the surgery that took him off the air for two weeks, Matthews is already at work and back to business as usual at the studio.
