Retired First Sergeant Matt Eversmann, the decorated war veteran whose bravery was immortalized in the book and blockbuster movie Black Hawk Down, stopped by Malvern Prep last week, according to a report from 6ABC.

Eversmann was leading a group of army rangers and delta force soldiers known as the Task Force Rangers in a daytime raid against enemy fighters in Somalia in 1993. The group was tasked with capturing a warlord named Mohamed Aidid and two of his lieutenants.

However, the encounter that was supposed to last 30 minutes turned into an intense, 18-hour battle.

Decades later, the veteran has been using the harrowing experience he endured as an inspiring story meant to equip the next generation of leaders.

During his visit to Malvern Prep, he talked to students about selfless service, courage, and duty.
