Berwyn-based Ametek is continuing its buying streak under new CEO David Zapico with a $925 million acquisition of Gatan, the California-based manufacturer of electron-microscope instruments and software, writes Joseph DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

This is also the highest-priced acquisition since Zapico took over the reins in 2016. Ametek is acquiring Gatan from Roper Technologies.

Gatan makes technology for direct detection, which is used by biosciences and materials companies for preparing and analyzing specimens. Among its products are electron microscopy cameras and instruments, electron-energy filters, software, and accessories. The company has $180 million in annual sales.

“Ametek is an ideal home for Gatan to continue its revolutionary work enabling electron microscopy technology,” said Neil Hunn, Roper’s CEO.

Before the latest acquisition, Ametek’s revenues had risen to $5 billion in the most recent 12-month period, from $3.8 billion when Zapico took over. This has resulted in the company’s shares doubling.

“Gatan is an outstanding company and nicely complements our existing portfolio of specialized offerings in high-end analytical instrumentation,” said Zapico.
