UPS is planning to hire 4,400 workers in the Philadelphia area, which includes its West Chester location, for the holiday season, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

This signals a possible downturn in UPS’s seasonal hiring in the region, as this is nearly 3,000 fewer seasonal employees than the shipping giant planned to hire last year.

However, UPS still plans to hire around 100,000 seasonal workers nationwide, which is about the same number as last year.

For the Philadelphia area, UPS is aiming to hire around 2,200 package handlers, 600 delivery and tractor-trailer drivers, and 1,000 driver-helpers. These seasonal positions will start in November and run through January.

The pay for tractor-trailer and package car drivers starts at $21 per hour. Package handlers and driver-helpers start at $14 per hour.

In addition to their hourly wages, eligible employees who are college students can also earn up to $1,300 to go toward college expenses. To qualify, they have to maintain continuous employment for three months with UPS.

Anyone interested in the positions can apply at 1200 Ward Avenue in West Chester. Other locations that will be hiring include Philadelphia and Horsham.
