New banners featuring information on notable West Chester figures on one side and original local art on the other have been added to lampposts along the borough’s streets, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Ten banners have been added recently to East Gay Street, joining those that already hang above High, Market, and Church streets.

While the Chester County Community Foundation supplied a number of banners, many were a gift from the West Chester-based Elmark Sign Company.

The artwork for the banners was chosen in a blind contest by the Public Arts Commission. Among the artists whose work was chosen to be featured on one of the banners is West Chester Mayor Dianne Herrin.

“I was thrilled when the judges picked my courthouse photo to be on one of the new lamppost banners on Gay Street!” said Herrin. “The judging was blind, so I felt good that my photo won on its merits.”

Herrin also said that the banners add another dimension to West Chester’s “downtown aesthetic experience.”

Among the historic figures featured are Mary Ann Shadd Cary, first female African-American publisher, and Joseph J. Lewis, author of Lincoln’s first biography.
