Malvern-based Endo Pharmaceuticals is joining forces with Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway to raise awareness of a little-known hand condition, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Dupuytren’s contracture affects an estimated 16 million Americans, including Elway, who has the condition in both hands. The disorder causes collagen to build up underneath the skin on the palms of the hand, causing one or more fingers to move into a bent position. The cause is unknown.

Endo markets the prescription medicine Xiaflex to treat Dupuytren’s contracture.

Elway will share his story as part of the company’s national education campaign, Facts on Hand. The goal is to educate Americans on the condition and empower those who may have it to talk with a specialist about possible treatment options.

“My hands are everything to me, but when I was diagnosed with Dupuytren’s contracture nearly 15 years ago, I waited to get treatment because I assumed surgery was my only option,” said Elway.

Before 2010 and the approval of Xiaflex, an injectable drug, Dupuytren’s contracture was primarily treated by surgery.
