This Brick-and-Mortar Movie Rental Chain Still Reigns Supreme Over Netflix in Rural Pennsylvania
While Netflix may have taken most of the nation by storm with its video-streaming service, a brick-and-mortar movie rental chain, Family Video, still reigns supreme in rural Pennsylvania, writes Jason Nark for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Netflix and other streaming services have caused the rapid demise of many brick-and-mortar movie rental businesses, including Blockbuster Video.
However, most residents of Warren County – home to 41,815 in northwest Pennsylvania – still prefer to go out and select their entertainment from the local Family Video store.
“There is something about physically touching the movies, about flipping it over and reading the back,” said Joe Carlton, 35. “You’re in a movie store for a reason. You came for movies.”
Another advantage that may bring back nostalgia for Friday night trips to the video store is the familiarity factor.
“We know all our customers by name,” said store manager Debbie Brown.
Slow Internet connections have also helped bring people into the stores.
“There’s people still using dial-up here,” said Todd Lake, Warren County’s public safety director.
Family Video has 22 stores, primarily in western Pennsylvania, with 700 total stores across the country.
