Founder of Wayne-Based Organizing Professionals Focuses on Practicality
Janet Bernstein, founder of Organizing Professionals in Wayne, ditches Marie Kondo’s signature, joy-focused approach in favor of practicality when helping people clean out their closets, writes Sarah Zlotnick for Philadelphia magazine.
Bernstein, who recently helped former CBS news anchor Susan Barnett organize her closets, believes that Kondo’s opening move – where she asks clients to pull out everything in the house – is not the best option for all situations.
“There’s not a single client that would not just burst into tears,” said Bernstein. “You’ve got to have a more controlled way of doing things.”
Bernstein starts the cleaning out process by assigning her team members to specific areas, such as the utility closet or organizing the kids’ stuff. The first step they then take is to empty shelves and drawers and determine what goes with what. This process is known as sorting “like with like.”
The next step is the culling. However, the items are not thrown out. They are “released,” said Bernstein.
Throughout the entire process, she makes sure no gifts are accepted.
“The client will wonder if I’m encouraging them to get rid of something because I want it,” she said. “That breaks down the trust.”
