Bar-Code Manufacturer in West Goshen Tackles ‘the Most Difficult Logistic Problem on the Planet’

Vanguard ID Systems, the bar-code manufacturer based in West Goshen that allows travelers to tag and track their suitcases, has landed its first contract with a major airline, writes Ellie Rushing for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The company produces ViewTag, a reusable electronic tag that is attached to luggage. It displays a changeable bar code that lets people minimize check-in time at an airport and track their bags during travel.

The company’s founder and chief executive, Rick Warther, came up with the idea 10 years ago, when an airline lost his wife’s luggage during her trip to Florida.

“I decided to take on the most difficult logistic problem on the planet: tracking luggage,” said Warther.

A decade later, ViewTag announced its five-year partnership with British Airways. This gives the airline exclusive dibs on the company’s product for 90 days. The airline is also responsible for marketing the tags to its customers.

“We have been testing all over,” said Warther. “The first 90 days is exclusive to British Airways, and after that, we will be shipping products all over the world.”
