Wrapping up what certainly could be described as the most successful athletic campaign in school history, West Chester University finished at No. 8 in the final IMG College Directors’ Cup standings, as recently announced by the National Association of College Directors’ of Athletics (NACDA).

The Directors’ Cup combines athletic achievement by every varsity sport’s performance in NCAA postseason competition. It is the highest WCU has placed in school history, topping the previous best of 12th place on two other occasions.

The Golden Rams used a national runner-up finish by their women’s lacrosse team (90), a national finals appearance by its softball program (78), along with national tournament appearances from baseball (25), men’s and women’s golf (29), women’s tennis (25), and women’s track & field (25), to pull in 272 points following the spring. WCU paired that number with the 148.5 points it earned in the winter and 220 points it earned following a historic fall campaign to give the Golden Rams a program-record 640.50 total points.

Grand Valley State, which has finished either No. 1 or No. 2 in the IMG College Directors’ Cup standings for the last 17 years, retained its top spot, after earning a national-best 1,004 points. That put the Lakers ahead of No. 2 UC San Diego, which finished with 826 points.

West Chester was the highest Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) school in the national listing. Shippensburg was next in 33rd place with 397.5 points. Mercyhurst was 35th (392.67). Last month, the Golden Rams won their second straight Dixon Trophy, and fifth in the last seven years, as the top athletic program in the PSAC.
