Exton resident Kyle Bryant has written a book on the 2,500-mile journey from San Diego to Memphis he undertook after receiving a grave diagnosis from his doctor, writes Elizabeth Wellington for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bryant was diagnosed with a degenerative neuromuscular disease when he was 17. Doctors predicted the disease would one day put him in a wheelchair and may send him to an early grave.

But instead of being fearful, Bryant taught himself how to ride a recumbent bike, and eight years later, he embarked on his six-week, cross-country journey.

Now 12 years later, Bryant has written about it in his book, Shifting Into High Gear: One Man’s Grave Diagnosis and The Epic Bike Ride That Taught Him What Matters.

In the book, Bryant recalls he often found himself on unknown roads, but always ended up at his destination. This made him realize that instead of choosing an angry route in life, he still had various options that could all lead to hope and happiness.

“This was an important revelation for me,” he said.

Bryant will read from his book at the Chester County Library in Exton on Tuesday, June 11.
