A movie theater chain based in Cambridge, Mass., has purchased the former Carmike Coventry 8 in North Coventry Township with plans to open one of its premium theaters there, writes Natalie Kostelni for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Flagship Cinemas paid $1.05 million for the property that has four parcels and fronts Route 724. The property at 790 Laurelwood Road was sold by Pennmark Management which purchased it three years ago, along with the Coventry Mall. The theater that once occupied the space has been closed for six years.

According to Bob Sichelsteil, chief financial officer of Pennmark, Flagship Cinemas will re-open the theater this spring, and that should help revitalize the Coventry Mall.

Flagship Cinemas currently operates 18 cinemas nationwide. This location in North Coventry will be its third in Pennsylvania.

The company buys and upgrades old movie theaters with new technology and installs premium features, such including recliners, enhanced amenities, and upscale dining. Some locations also offer beer and wine.

“We pride ourselves on being known as the ’neighborhood theatre’ that offers quality entertainment for families and businesses within the communities we serve,” the company said on its website.
