Inspired by thoughts of his close friend, Ray Thompson, who died unexpectedly in November, Berwyn resident Oscar Mestre recently won his first Warner Cup, an amateur golf tournament, at the Burlington Country Club in Mount Holly, N.J., according to a report from the Golf Association of Philadelphia.

Mestre, 59, who represented Overbrook Golf Club in Villanova, won with a tidy three-under-par 67.

“It sounds corny to say, but I definitely thought about Ray a lot today,” said Mestre, a graduate of The Haverford School.

Mestre, who serves as the GAP’s Executive Committee Vice President, has found his golfing career reinvigorated by the senior circuit. He attributes winning to his comfort level.

“When I was in my 40s and early 50s, I was playing with the younger guys, and there really isn’t much conversation,” he said. “With the senior guys I’ve played with and against for so many years, it’s about playing with old friends again.”
