Amber Lynn Thompson, better known as Amberella, uses street art to empower individuals and spread positivity, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.

Thompson, who grew up in West Chester and is one of the most recognizable street artists in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, discovered her love of the arts at an early age.

“I was always in the creative world in some way,” she said. “I wanted to be able to share those gifts.”

Her first foray into street art came 10 years ago, when she created a body of work centering on catcalling and street harassment, something she experienced in Philadelphia after moving there in 1999. She also realized that the work would make much sense in a public space.

“I made the glue and started pasting the images around the city,” she said. “They were bold and in your face — and so is catcalling.”

Since then, she has created a number of recognizable pieces around the city, including her Power Hearts series, which she hopes will help people with whatever they are struggling with.

“No matter how dark of a time you go through, you’re really not alone,” she said.
