Wright helped the Golden Rams to a third-place finish, the highest finish for the women at the national championships in more than a decade.
Great Britain’s pride and joy won the 500-yard freestyle (in 4:48.33 seconds), the 1,000-yard freestyle (in 9:45.86 seconds), and 1,650-yard freestyle (in 16:20.5 seconds). She now has seven national titles to her credit.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
Sophomore Caroline Lewis, a West Chester East graduate, registered a mark of 19 feet 16.25 inches to capture fifth place at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships and earn All-American honors.
Lewis is WCU’s first female Indoor All-American since sprinter Danielle Scardino earned the honor at the end of the 2008 season.
She also earned another All-America certificate with an eighth-place finish in the pentathlon.
Poetry Center
West Chester University’s Poetry Center will welcome Richard Blanco, whom President Obama selected to read at his second inauguration, as the 2019 Poet-in-Residence. Blanco will do two public events on campus today, March 19.
Blanco will speak and do an informal meet-and-greet from 11:15 AM-1:15 PM in Main Hall, Room 200. He’ll do a short reading and give a craft talk on how cultural identity and place inform his poetry and memoirs. Pizza will be served.
He’ll do an evening book signing in Anderson Hall, Room 211, at 7:30 PM. He’ll read from his new book, How to Love a Country, which will also be available for sale, as will several of his other works. How to Love a Country explores immigration, gun violence, racism, and LGBTQ issues.
Both events are free and open to the public.
